Pro tip: Always confirm the peel type printed on your transfer packaging. Hot-peel and cold-peel DTF films use different adhesive formulations, and peeling at the wrong moment is the number one cause of lifted edges.
Why Fabric Type Changes Your DTF Press Settings
DTF transfers work by melting a layer of hot-melt adhesive powder that sits behind the printed ink. Heat and pressure push that adhesive into the fibers of the garment, and once it cools, it locks the design in place. The adhesive itself needs roughly 280–320°F to fully activate, which is why most DTF settings live in that range. The fabric, however, decides how far up or down that range you can safely go.
Cotton is a natural fiber that tolerates high heat without changing color or shrinking under a 15-second press. That means you can run hotter and longer, which gives you the strongest possible bond. Polyester is a synthetic that starts to soften and, more importantly, releases its dye when it gets too hot. Push polyester above 300°F and you risk dye migration, where the garment color bleeds into your white ink and turns a crisp white logo pink, blue or gray. Blends sit in the middle and inherit a bit of both behaviors, so they need a compromise setting.
Understanding this one principle, that the adhesive wants heat but the fabric sets the ceiling, will let you troubleshoot almost any DTF pressing problem yourself.
DTF Heat Press Settings for 100% Cotton
Cotton is the easiest fabric to press DTF onto, and it is where most people start. Standard cotton tees from brands like Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Comfort Colors and Next Level all press beautifully at the same settings.
- Temperature: 300–320°F (150–160°C). We run 310°F on most of our cotton jobs.
- Time: 12–15 seconds for the first press.
- Pressure: Medium to firm. On a clamshell press, you should need to lean into the handle slightly to close it.
- Peel: Hot or warm peel for most modern films. Peel in one smooth, low-angle motion.
- Second press: 5–10 seconds with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet on top.
Heavier cotton garments such as Comfort Colors 1717 or a 6 oz Gildan Ultra Cotton benefit from the top of the time range (15 seconds) because the thicker fabric absorbs more heat before the adhesive reaches temperature. Ringspun and combed cotton with a smoother surface can go closer to 12 seconds.
The second press is not optional on cotton. It pushes the adhesive deeper into the fibers, flattens the transfer so it has a softer hand feel, and gives the design a matte or semi-matte finish instead of a shiny plastic look. If you want a more vintage, distressed appearance, press the second time with a textured parchment paper.
DTF Heat Press Settings for 100% Polyester
Polyester is where most DTF mistakes happen. Sports jerseys, moisture-wicking tees, sublimation blanks, work polos and most "performance" fabrics are 100% polyester, and they all need lower heat.
- Temperature: 270–285°F (132–140°C). Never exceed 290°F on dark or bright polyester.
- Time: 10–12 seconds.
- Pressure: Medium. Too much pressure on thin polyester leaves a visible platen imprint.
- Peel: Warm or cold peel. Let the transfer cool for 5–10 seconds before peeling to prevent the ink from lifting with the film.
- Second press: 5 seconds, no longer, with a Teflon sheet.
The lower temperature does two things. First, it stays under the point where polyester dye starts to sublimate and migrate, which protects white and light-colored areas of your design. Second, it prevents scorch marks and the glossy "burn" box that appears around a transfer when a polyester garment gets too hot. Red, royal blue, purple and neon polyester are the worst offenders for dye migration, so on those colors we drop to 270°F and keep the time at 10 seconds.
Because the adhesive is activating at a lower temperature, the bond on polyester relies more on pressure and cooling time. Do not rush the peel. A cold peel on polyester consistently produces a stronger, cleaner result than a hot peel, even if the film is labeled hot-peel.
If you need to press DTF onto a garment that has already been sublimated or dyed with a heat-sensitive process, test on a hidden area first. Some sublimated polyester will ghost or shift color at any temperature above 260°F.
DTF Heat Press Settings for Poly-Cotton Blends (50/50, 60/40, 65/35)
Blends are the most common fabric in the promotional and retail apparel world. Gildan DryBlend (50/50), Jerzees NuBlend, Hanes EcoSmart, and the majority of hoodies and sweatpants on the market are cotton-polyester blends. The right DTF settings for blends split the difference between cotton and polyester.
- Temperature: 290–305°F (143–152°C). We use 300°F as our default for 50/50.
- Time: 10–15 seconds. Lean toward 12 seconds for lightweight tees and 15 for sweatshirts.
- Pressure: Medium.
- Peel: Warm peel, roughly 3–5 seconds after lifting the platen.
- Second press: 5–10 seconds with parchment.
The higher the polyester content, the lower you should sit in that range. A 65/35 poly-cotton fabric should be treated almost like polyester at 290°F, while a 60/40 cotton-poly can handle 305°F comfortably. If the tag does not list the exact ratio, assume 50/50 and press at 300°F.
Blends are slightly more prone to a visible press box than pure cotton, especially in darker colors. Using a pressing pillow or foam pad under the garment, and pressing with a Teflon sheet over the whole platen area, helps the heat mark disappear as the garment cools.
DTF Heat Press Settings for Tri-Blends and Rayon
Tri-blend tees (typically 50% polyester, 25% cotton, 25% rayon) from Bella+Canvas, Next Level and American Apparel are soft, thin, and heat-sensitive because of the rayon. Rayon can scorch, shrink and go shiny under too much heat.
- Temperature: 280–295°F (138–146°C).
- Time: 10–12 seconds.
- Pressure: Medium, never firm.
- Peel: Warm to cold.
- Second press: 5 seconds with a Teflon sheet.
Tri-blends stretch more than any other common tee fabric. To stop the transfer from cracking when the shirt is pulled on, press at the lower end of the time range and do the second press with the garment slightly stretched. A properly pressed DTF transfer will flex with the fabric without cracking; an over-pressed one becomes brittle.
Special Cases: Fleece, Hoodies, Nylon, Performance Wear and Canvas
Hoodies and Sweatshirts
Cotton fleece and heavy poly-cotton fleece need the full 15 seconds because the thick, lofty fabric acts as insulation. Set 300–315°F for cotton fleece and 295°F for 50/50 fleece. Use firm pressure and always pre-press for 5–7 seconds to flatten the nap and remove moisture. Keep seams, pockets and zippers off the platen by using a pressing pillow so the transfer area gets even contact.
Nylon Jackets, Windbreakers and Bags
Nylon is the most delicate fabric on this list. Press at 260–275°F for 8–10 seconds with light to medium pressure and a cold peel. Some coated nylon will not accept DTF at all, so test a scrap or the inside hem first. Skip the second press or keep it to 3–5 seconds with a Teflon sheet.
Performance and Dri-Fit Polyester
Thin, moisture-wicking performance shirts should be pressed at 265–280°F for 8–10 seconds. Use light to medium pressure to avoid the platen outline and choose a cold peel. On these garments a smaller, lighter-weight design with less solid white underbase will look and wear better than a huge full-color block.
Canvas, Denim and Tote Bags
Heavy natural fabrics can take the highest heat. Press at 310–320°F for 15 seconds with firm pressure, then do a 10-second second press. Denim with stretch (elastane) should be treated like a blend at 300°F.
Step-by-Step: How to Press a DTF Transfer Correctly
The chart gives you the numbers, but the process matters just as much. Here is the exact routine we follow for every garment.
- Preheat the press to the correct temperature for your fabric and let it hold there for at least 5 minutes so the platen is evenly heated edge to edge.
- Pre-press the garment for 5–7 seconds with nothing on it. This removes moisture and wrinkles, both of which weaken the adhesive bond.
- Position the transfer printed side down on the garment. The film should be on top. Use heat-resistant tape on large transfers so nothing shifts when the platen comes down.
- Press for the time on the chart with the pressure on the chart. Do not add time "just to be safe." Over-pressing is as harmful as under-pressing.
- Peel according to the film type: immediately for hot-peel, after 5–10 seconds for warm, or once fully cool for cold-peel. Peel low and slow, keeping the film almost flat against the garment.
- Second press with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet on top for 5–10 seconds. This is what gives DTF its wash durability and soft finish.
- Let it cool completely before folding, stacking or stretching the garment.
Understanding Pressure: Light, Medium and Firm Explained
Pressure is the most misunderstood part of DTF heat press settings because most home presses do not display it as a number. Here is a practical way to think about it.
Light pressure means the press closes with almost no resistance and you could slide a sheet of paper out from under the platen with a little effort. Use it for nylon and thin performance fabrics.
Medium pressure means you feel firm resistance in the last inch of closing a clamshell, or a pneumatic press is set around 40–50 PSI. This is the setting for polyester, blends and tri-blends.
Firm pressure means you need to put real weight behind the handle to lock it, or a pneumatic press is at 55–65 PSI. This is for cotton, fleece and canvas.
Too little pressure leaves the adhesive sitting on top of the fabric, which shows up as edges that lift after the first wash. Too much pressure squeezes the adhesive out past the edges of the design, creating a glossy halo, and on thin fabrics it leaves a permanent platen imprint.
Hot Peel vs Cold Peel DTF Transfers
Modern DTF films come in three peel types, and the chart above assumes you are matching the peel to the film.
Hot-peel film is peeled immediately after the platen lifts, while the transfer is still hot. It is the fastest for production and works best on cotton at 300°F and above. On polyester, even hot-peel film usually performs better if you wait a few seconds.
Warm-peel film is peeled after roughly 5–10 seconds, once you can comfortably touch the film. This is the safest all-around choice and the one we recommend for blends.
Cold-peel film must cool to room temperature, typically 20–30 seconds, before you peel. It gives the cleanest release on polyester, nylon and fine detail designs because the adhesive has fully set before the film comes off.
If you peel a cold-peel film hot, the ink will stretch and lift with the film. If you peel a hot-peel film cold, it may stick and tear. When in doubt, cool peel is the more forgiving mistake.
Common DTF Pressing Problems and How to Fix Them
Transfer is peeling or lifting at the edges
Under-pressed. Increase time by 2–3 seconds, increase pressure one level, and make sure you did a second press. Check that the garment was pre-pressed to remove moisture.
Design cracks when the shirt is stretched
Over-pressed or wrong fabric setting. Reduce time and temperature slightly, and make sure the second press is not more than 10 seconds. On tri-blends and polyester, drop to the bottom of the range.
White ink turned pink, blue or gray
Dye migration from polyester. Drop the temperature to 270°F, reduce time to 10 seconds, and use a cold peel. Pressing a blocker sheet or choosing a lighter garment color are the only fixes once the garment is already affected.
Shiny box or scorch mark around the transfer
Temperature too high for the fabric, usually polyester or tri-blend. Lower the heat 10–15°F and cover the entire platen area with a Teflon sheet. Most heat boxes on polyester fade as the fabric cools; permanent ones are scorch and cannot be reversed.
Ink lifted with the film during peel
Peeled too early for the film type, or the transfer was not fully activated. Re-press the transfer with the film back in place for 5 seconds, then peel cooler. If the whole design lifted, the temperature was too low.
Transfer feels thick, plastic or stiff
Skipped or too-short second press. Press again with parchment paper for 10 seconds. This is also a sign of too much adhesive powder on a lower-quality transfer.
Design washed out after a few washes
Either under-pressed (see the first fix) or the garment was washed too soon. Wait 24–48 hours after pressing before the first wash, then wash inside out in cold water and hang or tumble dry on low.
Calibrating Your Heat Press: Why the Number on the Dial Might Be Wrong
A surprising number of DTF failures come from a heat press that reads 310°F but is actually pressing at 285°F. Budget clamshell presses can be 15–30°F off from the display, and even good presses lose accuracy at the edges of the platen.
Buy an inexpensive infrared thermometer or a set of temperature test strips and check your platen in the center and all four corners. If the center reads 310°F and a corner reads 290°F, your large transfers will bond unevenly. Adjust the dial until the actual surface temperature matches the chart, and re-check every few months. This one step fixes more "my transfers won't stick" problems than any other.
Before Your First Press: A Quick Checklist
- Verify your press temperature with a thermometer, not just the display.
- Confirm the fabric content on the garment tag and pick the matching row from the chart.
- Confirm the peel type of your transfer (hot, warm or cold).
- Have parchment paper or a Teflon sheet ready for the second press.
- Use a pressing pillow for hoodies, bags and anything with seams or zippers.
- Pre-press every garment for 5–7 seconds.
- Test one garment before running a full order.

How soon can I wash a garment after pressing DTF?
